City Manager John McDonough and Fire Chief Brian Horton have promoted two officers to the rank of Division Chief, effective Monday, December 12, 2022.
Tristan Johnson, who most recently served as the Fire Marshal, will become the Fire Department’s Division Chief of Administration. Assistant Fire Chief David Hindman also received promotion to Division Chief of Operations. Both will report directly to the Fire Chief.
Johnson’s primary responsibilities will be to assist in planning, directing, managing and overseeing day-to-day activities and operations of the Administrative Division including fire prevention, emergency management and disaster preparedness, logistics, fleet services and accreditation. Hindman will assist in planning, directing, managing, and overseeing day-to-day activities and operations of the Operations Division, including fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, rescue, training, emergency management and disaster preparedness.
Johnson has over a decade of experience in the fire service, serving for the past 13 years with the Greenville City Fire Department. Prior to becoming Greenville’s Division Chief of Administration, Tristan was the city’s Fire Marshal. Chief Johnson also coordinated the fire department’s community risk reduction, public information, and education efforts. He holds national and regional certifications in his respective field.
A 25-year resident of Greenville, Chief Johnson graduated from Eastside High School and earned an associate degree in public safety from Greenville Tech, a bachelor of science degree from Columbia Southern University, and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Southern University.
Hindman began his firefighting career as a junior firefighter at the age of 16 and has been a career firefighter for more than 22 years. He has served as firefighter, driver, company officer, shift commander, training officer, and Deputy Fire Marshal. Chief Hindman has been with the City of Greenville for the past five years. Prior to becoming Greenville’s Division Chief of Operations, he served as Assistant Chief of Administration and oversaw planning, special operations, training, medical, and the accreditation division.
Chief Hindman is a graduate of the 2013-2014 South Carolina State Firefighters Association Leadership Institute, is completing his final year in the Executive Fire Officer program at the National Fire Academy, and is pursuing a PhD in Public Administration. He received Fire Officer credentials from the Commission on Public Safety Excellence in 2015 and holds extensive certifications from both the South Carolina Fire Academy and National Fire Academy, including Fire Instructor II and Fire Officer IV.
