Power in the Flower Street Beautification Campaign
Apr 13 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
The Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge

On the heels of a highly successful 2018 Campaign, we’re happy to invite area businesses to once again participate in the 2019 Power in the Flower Campaign to Beautify the main commercial corridor through Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village.
The Power in the Flower Campaign is an effective branding tool to visually connect our towns and create a sense of harmony, cohesion, and beauty. For this year’s project, we would love to see the participation grow even more!
Thanks to the ongoing commitment of a core group of volunteers from the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, the Town of Lake Lure, and the Chimney Rock Village Community Development Association, the Chamber is able to sell the hanging flower baskets or pots at a minimal cost. Our volunteers will do all the legwork for you.
All you have to do is make your selections, and pay for your order. We’ll do the rest! To participate, you must order and pay by April 22nd.

Record Store Day 2019
Apr 13 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
Horizon Records

RECORD STORE DAY’s 2019 edition is the 12th anniversary of a bold, industry-shaking resurgence in vinyl, which has helped keep Horizon Records (and hundreds of other indie stores) going strong in these cynical and digitally obsessed modern times.

The full list of groovy RSD titles is OUT NOW, available here: https://recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases

We are bringing y’all the swinging-est, funky-est Record Store Day ever (again). Horizon opens at 8AM for the 2019 LIMITED EDITION special RECORD STORE DAY RELEASES UNFURLING – we have got a ton of them – over 450 different selections. Some just a few copies each, some nice quantities. Its first come first served. In the interest of fairness to all: limit one per customer of a particular title – buy all you care to, but only one of each title per person. It’s insane and confusing and a lot of fun, but that’s rock n roll eh?

And it will be full on ALL DAY LONG UNTIL 10 p.m. and onward into Sunday and Monday while the goodies last!

Tri the Midlands
Apr 13 @ 8:00 am – 10:30 am
Lake Carolina

Tri the Midlands is a GREAT way to kick off the open water triathlon season!

The Lake Swim is a beginner-friendly, quick, 500m triangular course that enters the water from the beach a short walk from transition area. Athletes will begin with a deep water start.

Transition
The transition area is located near the lake on Harborside Circle. This space is located completely on the pavement adjacent to the swim exit.

When exiting the swim you will run out over a sandy path with some pine needles (we will rake the path the day before the race and make sure there are no ants and cover this with carpet). Next you will cross over about 25 yards of pavement and into transition. This area is directly adjacent to the small grassy park on Harborside Circle in the Harborside neighborhood of Lake Carolina.

Bike
The bike leaves Lake Carolina from the front entrance and moves through the rural roads over rolling hills finally re-entering Lake Carolina near the YMCA and ending back in Harborside.

Run
The out-&-back run then takes the athletes out into Lake Carolina along scenic trails and Tri the Midland Finish Line – 2010over the bridge before ending at the Village Green in Harborside. The challenge in the run is heading up the hill after crossing the lake bridge. There is a steep grade on this hill but it only lasts for a couple hundred yards! The Village Green make Tri the Midlands a spectator friendly race and provides a great backdrop for post race discussions and refreshments.Lake Carolina – GTS Banner This is also a great area for spectators to hang out! From the green they can see the bike route leaving and returning as well as the race/run finish. We recommend having spectators bring fold out chairs and a cooler with their favorite refreshments so they can enjoy themselves while they wait for their favorite athletes to pass by & finish!

DeTour de Skunk (at the 2019 SpringSkunk Music Fest)
Apr 13 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Albino Skunk Music Festival

DeTour de Skunk is a charity bicycle ride through the foothills of the Blue Ridge that begins and ends at the parking area of the SpringSkunk Music Fest (4063 Jordan Rd, Greer, SC 29651) on Saturday April 13, 2019. Check in starts at 8:00 am, the ride starts at 9:00 am. Riders get a commemorative t-shirt, a wristband good for a few hours of entry to the festival afterwards and a cold beer (if 21, of course). More details at albinoskunk.com/detour-de-skunk.

The beneficiary of our Spring 2019 ride will be James Schlender of Songs From The Road Band. James underwent open heart surgery to replace a valve right before his band played our Fall 2018 festival. Gladly, he’s back on his feet and on-stage now, but has incurred great cost. Details about James and a link to make a direct donation are found here: https://www.gofundme.com/help-james-schlender

The ride costs $35. Advance signup is closed. Saturday morning day-of sign-up will be available starting at 8:00 am (cash or check). Please be there by 8:30 am, as the ride leaves at 9:00 am.

There are two routes of differing distance and difficulty. The short route is a beginner-friendly 15 mile run (639 total feet of gain) along rolling country roads from the Skunk Farm to 1909 Campbell’s Covered Bridge and back. The long route, which is 34 miles (1928 total feet of gain) and has a couple of more difficult climbs, includes the short route and also goes through Tigerville and past the 1820 Poinsett Bridge. There are parks at each bridge. We’ll have manned rest stops at each with refreshments, and for a look and photos if you like.

Route information is immediately below for Ride WIth GPS (website or downloadable to app.) and Google Maps. Note that the Google Maps Long Route shows an optional Bypass if you wish to go further than the Short Route takes you (through Tigerville and up to Route 11), but you want to skip the difficult climb past the Poinsett Bridge.

We will have pre-race equipment checks and adjustments and an on-call SAG vehicle if a need arises on the routes. We will have personnel with food and drink at each rest stop.

And as a reminder, we now have two private showers for campers and cyclists!
