Dressing for the Occasion: a New Temporary Exhibit
May 17 @ 9:00 am – May 18 @ 5:00 am
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.

“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

Jazz on the Square featuring Earsight
May 17 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Daniel Morgan Square

Jazz on the Square is held on most Fridays in April and May. A different local/regional Jazz group performs each week. The Event is free and beverages are available for purchase. Jazz on the Square is presented by the City of Spartanburg and sponsored by Budweiser of Spartanburg.

Earsight is a high-energy, instrumental funk/jazz quartet based out of Upstate South Carolina (Greenville/Spartanburg). Combining funk, straight-ahead jazz, soul, gospel, and New Orleans flavor, Earsight produces intoxicating, danceable grooves with a progressive edge, reminiscent of bands like Soulive, Galactic, and Medeski, Martin and Wood. The music is tight yet exploratory with an emphasis on interaction and improvisation.
Earsight is Adam Knight (guitar), Tim Blackwell (drums), Will Sinclair (keyboards) and David Katilius (bass). The band members have been involved in various successful projects and have years of combined experience, playing with jazz greats such as Ellis Marsalis, Wycliff Gordan, Walter Blanding Jr. and Kenny Garret to name a few. With past projects they have had the opportunity to open for such influential and diverse artists as Maceo Parker, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Wynton Marsalis, and Incubus.
Earsight’s self-titled debut CD, released in 2015, has received positive reviews and regional airplay. They are currently busy writing, recording, and performing at festivals and venues in the Southeast.

Brandy Lindsey & The Punch (feat. Bill Noonan) w/David Smith & Charles…
May 17 @ 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Fr8yard

ABOUT BRANDY LINDSEY & THE PUNCH

Jamison Smith, electric guitarist and backing vocalist, is no side man. A singer/songwriter/guitar player in his band Milgrim’s 27, he knows how to hold his own. Joining this group was a new role to play, and he took the challenge in stride. Additionally, as an active supporter of the original music scene, it is no surprise that he founded and has hosted Sunday Songwriter Night for seven years. In 2003, he was involved in a large music project that Eric and Brandy were also a part of. They didn’t know then, but it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Eric “Teacher” Lindsey, bassist, is one of the most respected players Upstate, S.C. Never one to stick to the root, he avoids overplaying and seems to find all the magic notes. Another notch on his belt is being an original member of The Ragged Orchids, a band he proudly played with until family life crept into “the nightlife.”

Brandy Lindsey was not planning on becoming a musician until her then-friend/now-husband (Eric) approached her about singing in his band after hearing her sing oohs and ahs on a mic during a practice session. Without knowledge of singing or playing (much less songwriting), it soon became apparent that her calling was hiding in her all along. Who knew that rehearsal would lead to a life of music and motherhood?

Together, with some shared influences and differing ones, what binds them sonically and personally is the way they approach music… “play to the song, and the rest will fall into place.” Luckily, they themselves have fallen into place as Brandy Lindsey and the Punch.
