Upstate Authors Kathryn Smith and Kelly Durham to Celebrate Launch of Latest Novel
Kathryn Smith and Kelly Durham will be celebrating the launch of their novel, Shirley Temple is Missing (CreateSpace, paperback, $15.99), at an in-store book launch party at Fiction Addiction on Saturday, March 17th, from 3-5pm. This event is free and open to the public. Books can be purchased online, at the store, or by calling Fiction Addiction at 864-675-0540.
America’s sweetheart has been kidnapped!
It’s 1935, and Shirley Temple is the most popular film star in the world, a symbol of hope for millions in the midst of the Great Depression. When the little girl disappears from a train en route to San Francisco, President Roosevelt’s multi-talented private secretary, Missy LeHand, joins forces with FBI Agent Corey Wainwright to recover her — in one harrowing weekend! A devious newspaper reporter, the Irish-American crime boss of San Francisco, members of the Italian underworld, the most notorious madam in the city, and the bombastic head of Shirley’s movie studio, Darryl Zanuck, all have roles to play in this fast-paced mystery.
Kelly Durham, author of eight thrillers set against the backdrops of World War II and the Golden Age of Hollywood, and Kathryn Smith, author of Missy LeHand’s biography THE GATEKEEPER, team up in this debut Missy LeHand Mystery.
About the authors:
Kathryn Smith is a journalist and writer with a life-long interest in FDR and his circle. She has lived all her life in Georgia and South Carolina, and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Georgia. She worked as a daily newspaper reporter and editor, and has been the book columnist for the Anderson Independent Mail for twenty years. She has been involved through Rotary International in the worldwide effort to eradicate polio, called PolioPlus, and she has lectured and spoken on FDR’s leadership in that arena. Smith is the author of an oral history of World War II told by living veterans and civilians called “A Necessary War.”
Kelly Durham is the author of six historical fiction novels set during the 1930s and 1940s. He lives in Clemson, SC with his wife Yvonne, their daughters Mary Kate, Addison and Callie and their dog, George Marshall. A graduate of Clemson University, Kelly served four years in the US Army with assignments in Arizona and Germany before returning to Clemson and entering private business.

The Gallery at Flat Rock Presents March Art Madness

In a spirit of extreme non-competitiveness, the team of artists represented by The Gallery at Flat Rock will get focused on the inspiration that spring fever brings in a special month of “March Art Madness.” This first-ever month-long art obsession will launch March 3, with artists taking their respective art forms to the floorboards of the gallery in what promises to be a riotous display of creative activity.

Crafted as a stimulating cultural alternative to the endless mind-numbing basketball of that other March event, March Art Madness will get viewers involved with a free raffle offering a $150 prize for the art fan who clocks the most visits to witness artists in action as they show off their skilled finesse in paint, clay, wood and drawing media on the gallery floor.

Here’s how it works: March 3 through March 31, 2018, artists will be sweating out artwork from 1-5 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sundays, with pairs of artists stacked in two-hour time slots of jam-packed invention and creation. March Art Madness is free and open to the public.

The Gallery at Flat Rock represents finely curated art and craft, and is located in Flat Rock Square at 2702-A Greenville Highway in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; or by appointment. For more information on the gallery and March Art Madness please visit the website at www.galleryflatrock.com or call 828.698.7000.

Glamour on Board: Fashion from Titanic the Movie

Fashion from Titanic the Movie

February 9 – May 13, 2018

The stylish fashions and luxurious travels of the Vanderbilts launch at Biltmore with a stunning new exhibition, Glamour on Board: Fashion from Titanic the Movie. Dazzling costumes from the iconic film—representing the extensive wardrobes required by transatlantic travelers like George and Edith Vanderbilt in the early 1900s—will be displayed in the grand rooms of Biltmore House. This is the first large-scale exhibition of fashions from Titanic, which won a record 11 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Costume Design.

More than 45 film costumes evoke the lifestyle of the era, when voyages on the great ocean liners of the early 20th century offered high society and luxury on ships known as “Floating Palaces.” First class passengers took every opportunity to see and be seen in the finest fashions of the time, from strolling the promenade deck to attending elegant formal dinners. And, just like in Titanic, the days at sea fostered friendships and romances, including Vanderbilt’s courtship of Edith Stuyvesant Dresser.

Learn more about the Vanderbilts’ extensive travels while marveling at the exquisite detail meticulously recreated for these award-winning fashions.

Entry to this exhibition is included in Biltmore admission. Save $10 per admission ticket when you buy 7 or more days in advance.
