Historical Trees, Historical Places – A story of area trees and homes, many dating back more than one hundred years, with historical and current pictures. Stories of the gardeners who loved some of these trees (and a few other plants) are mingled in as well. Included are about 40 trees in Anderson, Abbeville, and Greenwood Counties, plus others.
Susan Temple is a member of Anderson Master Gardeners, Greater Greenville Master Gardeners, Anderson Garden Club, and is gardening editor for The Electric City News. She volunteers for Ask a Master Gardener booths and gives presentations on several topics. Susan worked in the retail nursery business for nine years and grows a mix of shrubs, trees, conifers, perennials, pass along plants, and most anything she thinks would be interesting to watch grow. Her gardening style is a relaxed cottage fashion with no certain design, working with what deer, voles and rabbits will let grow. She places plants by their particular requirements and for views from the house. Susan gardens on a very large scale but keeps it simple. Very little supplemental watering is done, only small amounts of organic fertilizers are used, leaves fall, seeds drop, and most are left as Mother Nature placed.

Attached is the flyer from the Rock Hill Council of Neighborhoods concerning the joint Service Project to help the Marshall Estates neighborhood clean up this old cemetery. This was done once before as an Eagle Service Project years ago, but since there is no Owner or means of maintenance, Nature has once again done her thing. We have moved the workday to Sat. March 30 from 8:30-3:30 in hopes that all NESA members can also lend a hand. We will also be needing power tools (chainsaws, weed eaters (w/blades), chainsaws, & chainsaws etc.) as well as shovels, axes, bush axes, rakes, hoes and clipper/pruners. We also need people that can move limbs, and pick up trash
Members of the RHCN and Marshall Estates will provide lunch and beverages (water, etc.) for the Volunteers and we have also received word from a Student Group at Winthrop that are about 20-30 strong who are interested in helping out as well. The Winthrop Group will have their first work day on March 13, so we will see how much they get done. They plan to have at least some of that group attend again on the 30th to work with us. As you can see, this is a true Community and Team effort and a great way to show just what impact Scouting can have in this regard.
I look forward to hearing from you all soon. If you have questions please contact me @ [email protected] or 803-524-1583
Best Regards,
Bill Binkley

With nearly 2,000 participants attending last year’s event, PACE Scholarship Academy has added additional locations to host our statewide Scholarship and College Fairs, to include: Sumter High School (February 2, 2019), and the Greenville University Center (March 30, 2019). Each event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We anticipate even more participation this year and want to ensure that these free event allow as many parents and students to attend as possible.
Our goal is to expose ALL high school students to potential scholarships and college opportunities and to encourage current undergraduate and graduate students who still need financial assistance to apply for qualifying scholarships. We are also promoting volunteer opportunities and the importance of joining professional organizations while in college, as we aim to foster “well rounded students.” We are giving away multiple $500 scholarships, HP laptops, gift cards, HP printers, etc. on the day of this event. This is a FREE event as long as you register by the deadline! You MUST print and present your ticket in order to be admitted on the day of the event.

Please follow us on Facebook @PaceScholarshipAcademy for updates and more information concerning these STATEWIDE fairs and our scholarship essay contest. Campers will deepen their understanding of how nature works while exploring the Lake Lyman which is part of the Tyger River watershed. There will be tons of games, challenges and outdoor fun. We will be exploring the habitats of native wildlife, learning about conservation areas, and taking a closer look at soil, water, plants, and animal populations. We will start each morning in Lyman Lodge and then split up into our Ecogroups based on age. Each group will rotate through the day’s activities and rejoin as the whole group for lunch and games. Some of the activities we have planned include fishing, canoeing, dissecting owl pellets, making your own jellyfish bait, cyanotype (sunlight exposure photography) and much more.

The Hub City Hog Fest is kicking off spring by hosting its 7th annual BBQ and Music Festival Friday and Saturday, April 5-6, in Daniel Morgan Square – the heart of Downtown Spartanburg!
The two-day festival boasts a stellar lineup of BBQ competitors, music performers and food vendors. The event also offers a free children’s entertainment area with carnival rides and bounce houses for all to enjoy.
Entry is free before 5 p.m. and $5 after 5 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, entry is $5 all day. Children 10 and under are free all weekend. Hog Bucks tickets must be used to purchase food and beverages. Proceeds from the event will benefit Mobile Meals of Spartanburg.
The Hub City Hog Fest is sure to have culinary delights for everyone to enjoy. While supplies last, festival goers can sample competition teams’ chicken wings from 6-8 p.m. on Friday and BBQ from noon-2 p.m. on Saturday. The event also includes more than half a dozen regional food trucks who will be on site all weekend and Artisan’s Alley on Saturday – a new addition to the event that will feature different wares from local vendors.
The Hub City Hog Fest’s stacked two-day music lineup starting on Friday will be a worthy companion to the event’s tasty treats. Bands to perform will be announced soon!
While the festival revolves around two days of BBQ and music, the primary focus of the Hog Fest is to bring a fun, family-oriented event to the community, and to raise money for a worthy, local charity.
The BBQ competition is sanctioned by the South Carolina BBQ Association and is organized and judged in accordance with their rules and regulations. Competition categories include butts, brisket, and ribs on Saturday, with a wing competition on Friday night. Several roads will be blocked off to accommodate 45 competing teams from across the tri-state area. Teams will set up on Church Street between Main Street and St. John Street.
For more information, visit www.hubcityhogfest.com.

On the heels of a highly successful 2018 Campaign, we’re happy to invite area businesses to once again participate in the 2019 Power in the Flower Campaign to Beautify the main commercial corridor through Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village.
The Power in the Flower Campaign is an effective branding tool to visually connect our towns and create a sense of harmony, cohesion, and beauty. For this year’s project, we would love to see the participation grow even more!
Thanks to the ongoing commitment of a core group of volunteers from the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, the Town of Lake Lure, and the Chimney Rock Village Community Development Association, the Chamber is able to sell the hanging flower baskets or pots at a minimal cost. Our volunteers will do all the legwork for you.
All you have to do is make your selections, and pay for your order. We’ll do the rest! To participate, you must order and pay by April 22nd.

The YWCA Racial Justice Workshop is open to our entire YWCA Asheville community – including our staff, volunteers, board, donors, program participants, Fitness Center and community members. This 90-minute workshop will take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 11:30 am and will be facilitated by Gerry Leonard, Racial Justice & Outreach Specialist and Lexus Walker, Tzedek Social Justice Fellow.
