12 Angry Men (1957)
directed by Sidney Lumet
written by Reginald Rose
starring Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb
1 hr 36 min
Post-film discussion hosted by Winston Cely, Film & TV Educator at ACTC
Despite its inherent whiteness, we’ve chosen this film to kick-off The Film House’s new beginning due to its analysis of groupthink and the power of a single voice. Join us on January 29 to learn more and partake in the discussion first-hand.
12 Angry Men, by Sidney Lumet, may be the most radical courtroom drama in cinema history. A behind-closed-doors look at the American legal system that is as riveting as it is spare, this iconic adaptation of Reginald Rose’s teleplay stars Henry Fonda as the dissenting member on a jury of white men ready to pass judgment on a Puerto Rican teenager charged with murdering his father. The result is a saga of epic proportions that plays out over a tense afternoon in one sweltering room. Lumet’s electrifying snapshot of 1950s America on the verge of change is one of the great feature film debuts.

The Theatre Department at Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock, North Carolina presents AUDITIONS for the world premiere of English faculty member Katie Winkler’s drama BATTERED: A Play about Domestic Violence Inspired by Robert Browning’s The Ring and the Book. Auditions will be held Monday, January 28th and Tuesday, January 29th @ 7 pm (weather permitting) in the Patton Auditorium. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. If you have any questions about auditions, contact Jennifer Treadway via email at [email protected] or call 828/694-1849.
BATTERED is a story within a story within a story, the play takes place in a small theater during the read-through of a new play by a young woman, Julia, who has escaped from a violent relationship with her intimate partner.
Julia has chosen to write an adaptation of the Victorian poet Robert Browning’s masterpiece, The Ring and the Book, drawn not only to the long narrative poem’s subject of the real-life murder of Pompilia Comparini by her husband Guido Franchescini, but also to the story of the great love between Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett. As the main character in this play within a play endures the increasing violence of her tyrannical husband’s abuse, Julia begins to relive her own nightmare.
As in past productions, including last season’s Stories from the Table by communications instructor Joshua Bledsoe, Battered is a collaborative effort involving Director Jennifer Treadway and the author, as well as BRCC students and community members. The desire is to raise awareness about the ongoing issue of domestic violence and also celebrate the enduring work of one of the greatest English poets of all time.

Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to see things in a brand new way. For astronaut Terry Virts, his newfound perspective was from the International Space Station (ISS), where he installed the Cupola module, granting an unprecedented 360-degree view from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him. Many of those images were later used in the National Geographic book View From Above and IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, but to hear Virts tell it, no photo can capture the perfect shade of blue from a sunrise viewed from outer space.
Join us at Discovery Place Science to go beyond earth and learn all about our solar system! How long is a day on Mars, what do you weigh in space and what’s your space height? Explore the wonders of the universe by relaxing under the stars in the Star Lab and have a look through a telescope.
