National Book Award Finalist Min Jin Lee
Feb 5 @ 3:00 pm

National Book Award Finalist Min Jin Lee to Talk About Latest Korean Novel at Fiction Addiction

From national bestselling author Min Jin Lee comes her latest novel, Pachinko (Grand Central Publishing, paperback, $15.99), a finalist for the National Book Award. This page-turning saga follows four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family fighting to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan while exiled from a home they never knew. Ms. Lee will discuss her new book at a book talk, followed by a Q&A session and a book signing, at Fiction Addiction on Monday, February 5th, at 3pm.

Tickets are $16.95 each. Each ticket admits one and includes a paperback copy of Pachinko. Tickets and books can be purchased online, at the store, or by calling Fiction Addiction at 864-675-0540.

“There could only be a few winners, and a lot of losers. And yet we played on, because we had hope that we might be the lucky ones.”

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant-and that her lover is married-she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son’s powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations.

Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan’s finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee’s complex and passionate characters-strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis-survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.

Titanic Movie Costumes at Biltmore
Feb 9 @ 11:00 am

February 9-May 13, 2018
The first large-scale exhibition of fashions from “Titanic,” the Oscar-winning film that celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is coming to Biltmore in February 2018! Titled “Glamour on Board: Fashion from Titanic the Movie”, see 45 costumes inside Biltmore House. The above dress worn by Kate Winslet in “Titanic” is on display now as a preview.

The exhibition represents the extensive wardrobes preferred by transatlantic travelers like George and Edith Vanderbilt in the early 1900s. Learn more about the Vanderbilts’ extensive travels while viewing these award-winning costumes. The blockbuster “Titanic” movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, winning a record 11 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Costume Design.

The costumes evoke the lifestyle of the era, when voyages on great ocean liners of the early 20th century offered luxury on ships known as “floating palaces.” First class passengers took every opportunity to see and be seen in the fashions of the time, including strolling the promenade deck and dining at elegant formal dinners.
