Flourish: Parenting Teens In an Anxiety-Ridden World
Feb 2 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Leaf Institute of Art and Vocation

What does it mean for our teens to flourish?

We hear a lot about setting them up for success, but how can we help them lean into what it means to be human?

How can we help them understand what their purpose is in life?

Our teens are growing up in a world marked by unprecedented technological advances, instant access to unlimited information, and a culture flooded with competing ideals and priorities. Performance is often valued above personhood. Social media ensures that our children are never alone – yet they are often lonely. We spend a great deal of time, energy and money preparing them to succeed in school and in the marketplace, but we rarely have the time to stop and consider what it means to thrive. To become more human. We want to offer the time, space, and tools that will help our teens not just to succeed – but to flourish.

Parenting teens is a vocation, and it asks that we help them prepare for their own callings as well.

This three hour, interactive session is designed for the parents of teenagers. We hope to equip and encourage you as you juggle the multiple priorities and demands of your parenting vocation given the unique opportunities and challenges inherent to our culture. Our time together will include space for personal reflection, a Q&A session, as well as practical tips and resources for parenting your teen. It takes a community to raise a child – consider inviting your neighbors, the parents of your kids’ friends, and parents from your school and church communities.

SPEAKER INFO:

Julie Silander is the founder and Chief Potential Officer at Greener Trees Advisors, LLC and an ardent champion of human and organizational flourishing. Her passion and vision for encouraging and equipping families is born of her diverse experiences in corporate America, as an educator and writer, and in parenting five teenagers (the final three are 14,17, and 19). Her most recent collaborative projects include artist Makoto Fujimura’s Culture Care initiative as well as piloting a Center for Creative Leadership program for teenage girls in the Charlotte area.

Dawn Poulterer Woods has been working in the education world over 20 years as a teacher and counselor with teenagers and families. For the last decade, she has led parent/youth seminars at schools, churches, and living rooms. Dawn speaks, writes and coaches individuals and families into a life of connectedness and wholeness while identifying what attacks and what promotes human flourishing.
