SFC: Choral Gems from Four Centuries
Nov 1 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

The Spartanburg Festival Chorus’ fall concert will feature 4 “choral gems” from 4 different centuries. In chronological order, the program will begin with G. Gabrieli’s, “In ecclesiis” (In the churches), written most likely as a thank offering from deliverance from the plague.
The second piece on the program is Bach’s Cantata #106, “God’s Time Is Best”. It was originally intended as music for a funeral. Textual themes include: the finite nature of life and getting one’s house in order.
The third piece on the program was written by American composer, Norman Dello Joio (1913-2008). “A Jubilant Song” celebrates the “uncaged spirit” appreciating the beauty of life and the lofty ideal of universal love.
Our program concludes with British composer Bob Chilcott’s 5-movement work, “Five Days that Changed the World”. It celebrates the invention of printing, the abolition of slavery, the first powered flight, the discovery of penicillin, and the first man in space.
