Greenville Police Department Reports a Crime Drop of 16 Percent

Police Chief Howie Thompson recently delivered crime statistics and direct feedback from residents during his report to Greenville City Council on July 14.

GPD statistics show a 16 percent drop in crime – including both violent and property crime – for January through June of 2025 when compared to the same time period in 2024. Thompson presented his findings, along with a first look at direct feedback from more than 500 citizens who completed follow-up text surveys after calling 9-1-1 and interacting with Greenville police officers.

“I watch their body cameras, I see their reports,” said Chief Thompson. “I know the good work they’re doing, and in fact, the citizens feel the same way.”

Across the board, interactions with GPD officers received high satisfaction scores, exceeding 90 percent. Highlights from survey respondents included:

  • 95 percent felt treated with fairness and respect
  • 93 percent said they received the help they needed
  • 91 percent – across all racial demographics – had a positive view of GPD
  • 91 percent rated their experience with the officer positively

“I’m proud of the responses that rate the police department positively,” Chief Thompson said, “because that’s the way I feel about them every day, I feel like they’re out here doing a good job.”
