Keep Plastic Bags Out of Recycling Carts

Workers at a recycling facility sorting through items.

The city is asking residents to keep plastic bags out of their recycling bins. Plastic bags, wraps, and other film cannot be recycled in your curbside recycling containers because they cause significant issues at recycling facilities.

However, there are many convenient locations throughout the Upstate area where you can drop off these materials to be recycled. Most grocery stores accept plastic bags for recycling. Bundle your bread bags, newspaper bags, produce bags, dry cleaning bags, and more to return to stores. See all accepted items at plasticfilmrecycling.org.

Plastic bag and film recycling is an example of product stewardship, where all parties who have a role in designing, producing, selling, or using a product assume responsibility for the environmental impacts of that product. Learn more about product stewardship from the EPA.
