In Business: Buttermilk Sky Pie

With a fondness for baking pies and a desire to share their time-honored family recipes, Scott and Meredith Layton opened the original Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop in the Bearden district of Knoxville, Tennessee, in 2012.

Their bakeries offer delicious scratch-made pies in four and nine inch sizes. Traditional pies like Southern Buttermilk, Coconut Cream, Granny’s Apple, I-40 Pecan, Key Lime, Chewy Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Cream, and Peanut Butter Cream are served year round. Made-from-scratch Thumbprint cookies, Cloud 9 (their take on pie a-la-mode), and unique dessert gift solutions provide the perfect dessert destination.

Buttermilk Sky Pie is a franchise, but Greenville owners Suzanne Keim and Michele Hay also possess a love for baking pies and the social aspect that comes with sharing nostalgic recipes with new friends. You can taste the love in each pie, and they are already being recognized for it! USA Today voted Buttermilk Sky Pie as “the best pie shop in South Carolina”! You can read more about this awesome recognition on their website.

Suzanne Keim is originally from Johnson City, Tennessee but has called the upstate of South Carolina home since attending Converse College in the early 80’s. When not baking pies, she is usually cycling and is a proud member of the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health women’s cycling team. She has two children and one wonderful son-in-law!

Michele Hay (Suzanne’s sister-in-law) is originally from Texas and a graduate of TCU. When not working out at Boot Camp she is a full-time CPA, mother of three teenage boys, and pie baker!

On their website you can find the ‘why’ in the origins for Buttermilk Sky Pie as founders Scott and Meredith declare, “Pies connect people to past memories and the love they’ve experienced in their lives. Older men shuffle in alone and quietly savor each bite of their pie, remembering the pies their wives used to make. Women smile wistfully and say how our pies taste like their mother’s pie that they remember from so long ago, pies they could never quite replicate. With a simple concoction of butter, sugar, eggs, and love people instantly travel back to happy times in their lives where they were surrounded with love. That taste of homemade pie makes those memories come to life, even if it is just for a fleeting moment.”

Buttermilk Sky Pie is conveniently located at 2222 Augusta Street, so go try some pie! For more information, visit www.buttermilkskypie.com.
