Each year Make-A-Wish®South Carolina grants more than 130 wishes to children who have life-threatening medical conditions – each one a life-affirming testament to hope, inspiration, and resilience. Wishes strengthen wish kids and their families, rally communities together, and change the lives of everyone involved.
When life-changing wishes are granted, a wish effect occurs. The wish allows children battling critical illnesses to build the hope and strength they need to fight harder and see the impossible become possible. Research shows wishes can give these children a higher chance of survival. And, it’s why health professionals often use a wish as part of their treatment plan, because wishes can build compliance with care and potentially give their patients a better chance of reducing time spent in the hospital. Wish parents say that a wish experience marks a turning point in their children’s response to treatment; children become empowered to take back control of their lives and to keep up the fight against their life-threatening medical conditions. There is nothing more powerful than a child’s wish – that’s the wish effect.
Every wish experience is driven by the wish kid’s interests, creativity and personality. A child may base his or her wish on the desire to go, to have, to meet, to be or to give. Wishes are more than just a nice thing. And they are far more than gifts, or singular events in time. Wishes impact everyone involved – wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals and communities. The impact varies. For wish kids, just the act of making their wish come true can give them the courage to comply with their medical treatments. Parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic. And still others might realize all they have to offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy.
Whatever the odds, whatever the obstacles … wishes find a way to make the world better.
