Salvage Archaeology in the Heart of Cofitachequi: A Native American Chiefdom

Much of successful archaeology involves our ability to “read the dirt.” In the summer of 2018, investigations were undertaken at the largest known site within this society aimed at understanding the occupational sequence and in particular when and how three extant pyramidal mounds were constructed along the Wateree River. The layers in the ground can answer many questions about the human past.
