As a gay woman who grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River in one of the most isolated parts of Kentucky, S.G. Goodman has the unique perspective of the insider who is also the outsider. Her songwriting seeks to carve a space for yourself in a place that you were born to, despite it not reflecting your feelings. After coming out, S.G. struggled with suicidal thoughts but didn’t want to seek refuge somewhere else. She wanted to stay and make music that saves her. Her debut album Old Time Feeling does just that by exploring the way most people see the South without fully understanding its complexities.
Her vocals are just as powerful as her lyrics. My Morning Jacket front man and S.G. Goodman’s co-producer Jim James recalls feeling spellbound when he first heard her.
