Information

Child-centered play therapy is one way to promote the resilience of children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma.
This experiential workshop will begin with engaging participants in activities designed to increase awareness of multicultural and social justice competencies and discuss ways that poverty and discrimination impact ACEs and the impact of ACEs on the developing brains of children.

With this as the lens for using child-centered play therapy, the rest of the day will be devoted to discussing and practicing the essential skills and methodology of child-centered play therapy. Participants will have opportunities to observe and practice skills, such as responding to feelings, tracking, esteem building, returning responsibility to the child, and setting limits.

The format will include a combination of presentation, demonstration, and opportunity for participants to try skills. The target audience and area of application will be counselors and social workers working with children who are 10 years or younger.
