In June, Walhalla native Walt Garland was admitted to the GHS ICU via a Med-Trans flight due to hemoptysis (blood in the lungs). Seeming perfectly healthy just that morning, the shock of being so incredibly ill later that day was overwhelming for the young couple. After three days of care, the doctors never determined the cause of Walt’s emergency.
As a newly married couple saving to buy a house, they were planning to invest in health insurance but had yet to do so before the crisis. They are now reaching out to this wonderful community to ask for help, but wish for the event to be beneficial for more than just themselves. To them, the Oconee Cultivation Project was a clear choice in beneficiary partnership.
The Oconee Cultivation Project (OCP) provides young people with opportunities to develop skills through mentorship and education in sustainable agriculture, culinary practices, and local food production. During their six-week summer program, CultivaTeen, a vibrant team of talented crew leaders and workshop volunteers works with local youth to encourage lifelong learning and engagement in the community. Through this program and collaboration with various organizations, OCP strives to create a community that celebrates local food, agricultural traditions, and sustainable living practices.
Last, but certainly not least, the silent auction showcases sponsoring local businesses and their one-of-a-kind products. We’ve been fortunate enough to have several items donated, which will be available for bidding to all of those who purchase a ticket!
