“Greenville High’s annual Spirit Week is coming up the week of September 1st – 7th, and this year we are raising money for Public Education Partners! Public Education Partners, or PEP, directly partners with Greenville County Schools and focuses on the quality of Greenville’s public education. Specifically, the money we raise during Spirit week would be funding the “Make Summer Count” program that PEP provides. The main goal of “Make Summer Count” is to prevent the summer reading slide, which is when a student’s academic and/or reading level is not maintained due to the lack of educational activities they engage in over the course of the summer. This summer slide has been proven to be worse in households without access to books, and proven to cause students to fall behind throughout the rest of their academic career. This program sponsors a free book fair to 29 elementary schools in Greenville County, all of which have over 50 percent of their students receiving free and reduced lunch. Each child at these schools gets to select 10 books assigned to their reading level for free, and they receive the books near the end of the school year, so they can take them home to read over the summer break. Public Education Partners follows up the book fair with family reading nights at the school which include story time for students, “read-aloud” demonstrations, and opportunities for parents to become involved in their child’s learning experience. “Make Summer Count” has been proven to help maintain and improve students academic levels over the summer. Our school will be supporting 10 of the elementary schools that feed into Greenville High or have a relationship with us, so the money we raise this year will be directly affecting the community surrounding Greenville High School.”
