Based on the book by Dr. Seuss

In this classic Dr. Seuss tale, Sally and her brother go on a wacky adventure with the Cat in the Hat, his many props, and his mysterious friends… Thing 1 and Thing 2! Join this whimsical cast of characters as this timeless story comes to life on stage.

Ages Recommended: Most enjoyed by children 4 and up

Language:

  • Lines have a consistent rhyme scheme (“Said our fish as he lit/’No I do not like it’/’not one little bit’”)

  • Complex or non-traditional sentence structure (“Do I like this? Oh no, I do not!”)

  • Use of puns and word play (“these Things are good Things”)

Themes and Situations:

  • Themes of “Rules and Orders;” the two children are confronted with the dilemma of having someone over when their mother isn’t home; although the children disobey their mother, they are confronted with this fact at the end and face the consequences of their choice to disobey

  • Throughout the play, there are elements of chaos that the kids endure. This includes the chaos that the cat brings into their household as he balances all of their plates and their fish in his hands, as well as seeing Thing 1 and Thing 2 ruin the house and their mother’s brand new dress.

Potential Scary Moments:

  • Thunder and rain (loud volume and potential flashing lights)

  • Big crashes and other loud noises

  • Doors slamming

  • Thing 1 and Thing 2 (physical appearance and mannerisms may be scary for some very young audience members)

  • General volume and lighting effects could be scary or overwhelming to very young audiences

Other Cautions/Advisories:

  • Theatrical effects such as flashing lights or loud sound effects

  • Disobedience is portrayed throughout the show, but is resolved at the end as a lesson learned

  • Mythical creatures and creative ideas are portrayed throughout, such as fish speaking, a humanoid cat, and Thing 1 and Thing 2
