Having been spared the brunt of the weekend’s historic rain event, the Greenville City Fire Department and various public safety agencies are now focusing their efforts on providing aid to their peers in the Midlands and the Lowcountry.
Numerous county fire agencies have sent apparatus and manpower to assist in the rescue efforts. In addition to these county assets, the Greenville City Fire Department, as part of the firefighter mobilization program (part of a statewide firefighting mutual aid program), has sent an engine staffed with firefighters from Greenville City and Boiling Springs Fire Departments, 16 swift water rescue techs, three technical rescue techs and a helicopter rescue tech.
According to Fire Chief Steve Kovalcik, the same agencies that gathered at City Hall Friday afternoon to coordinate efforts to protect the lives and property of Greenville residents and business owners, are now working together to lend assistance to communities that are facing unimaginable circumstances in the wake of the storms. “Greenville County is fortunate to have such a cohesive network of public safety agencies, as well as a significant amount of resources,” said Kovalcik. “And now that the danger has passed for our citizens, we’re all committed to doing whatever we can to help our colleagues in areas of SC that were devastated by the record rainfall and resulting floods.”
