Clemson Named a Top 30 Public University, USC Ranked No. 1 in International Business by U.S. News

Clemson University has reached its highest position to date in the annual "U.S.News & World Report" college rankings and is now a top 30 public institution. The University of South Carolina is the nation's best in undergraduate international business education for the 12th consecutive year, and its "First-Year Experiences" program for freshmen is also tops, according to the same publication.

For 2007, Clemson ranks 30th among the nation's 162 public doctoral-granting universities, a move up from 34th last year.

The latest report shows improvements in key educational areas, such as class size, quality of students and graduation rate.

"The hallmark of a top university is its ability to provide an outstanding educational experience for its students," said Clemson President James F. Barker. "Our faculty and staff are working diligently to improve the quality of the Clemson experience so that we can give South Carolina students a top-tier education right here at home. It's encouraging to see those efforts earn national recognition.

"When you improve the things that matter most to students and parents, like smaller classes and higher graduation rates, it also improves your national standing."

Last year, Clemson reported fewer classes with 50 or more students, and more classes with less than 20 students. The graduation rate rose from 72 percent to 75 percent, versus 57 percent for all institutions.

In addition, Clemson's engineering program is ranked 60th among engineering schools granting doctoral degrees. Clemson also is recognized as having an "outstanding example of an academic program believed to lead to student success" in its Writing Across the Curriculum program.

USC's Moore School of Business is 25th among public universities in "Best Business Programs."

USC's undergraduate international-business program has been No. 1 every year since 1995. The Moore School's program leads New York University, the University of Michigan, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California-Berkeley. Earlier this year, the Moore School's graduate international-business program was ranked No. 1 among public universities.

In its "Programs to Look For," the magazine highlights outstanding examples of academic programs that lead to student success. USC's popular University 101 program began in 1972 to introduce first-year students to life at Carolina and increase retention. In its fifth year of "Programs to Look For," the magazine ranked USC's successful programs for first-year students among those at Duke, Dartmouth, Princeton and Stanford universities.

The accolades for the university are timely. USC will launch "The Student Success Center," building on a supplemental academic program that began last year. New programs will be added to ensure academic success for all students, including first-year students.

In the magazine's ranking of "Best National Universities," USC is 54th among public institutions. National universities are in a group of 248 American universities (162 public and 86 private) that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors, as well master's and doctoral degrees. Criteria used for the rankings include student-faculty ratio, graduation and retention rates, alumni giving and SAT/ACT scores.

U.S. News also ranked USC Aiken 32nd in the South among "Best Comprehensive Colleges Bachelor's." This category recognizes institutions that focus on undergraduate education and offer a range of degree programs in liberal arts and in professional fields such as business, nursing and education. U.S. News looked at 320 comprehensive colleges within four regions: North, South, Midwest and West.
