Twenty-two high-school students have been awarded Carolina Alumni scholarships to attend the University of South Carolina in 2005. The students selected include a number of students from the Upstate area. Those chosen from the Upstate include Christine Joan Tennant, Southside High School, Chelsey L. Moore, T.L. Hanna High School, and Shawn D. Campbell, Dorman High School, Carolyn S. Rivers, Pickens High School, and Lindsay D. Langford, Laurens District 55 High School.
Alumni scholarships are supported by contributions from members of the Carolina Alumni Association and are awarded for high academic achievement, leadership, talent and service. The scholarships are among the most prestigious awarded by the university. The winning alumni scholars were chosen from hundreds of applicants and have an average SAT score of 1396 (a 28-point increase from 2004) and an average weighted grade-point average of 4.6. Eighty-six percent of incoming Carolina Alumni scholars will be students in the South Carolina Honors College, with the remaining 14 percent of them named to USC's Capstone Scholars Program, a new academic-enrichment program that targets high-achieving students who do not meet the stringent admissions requirements for USC's honors college but would benefit from an expanded academic experience. Alumni scholars receive $14,000 for four years of study at USC Columbia. Out-of-state students are entitled to in-state tuition rates in addition to the scholarship. The Alumni Scholars Association was chartered in 1995 through the Carolina Alumni Association. The association fosters each scholar's success in academics, leadership and service by encouraging him or her to become active in the organization.
