The SHS Forensic Team, along with Coach Erickson Bynum, attended the National Forensic League (NFL) "Stars Fell on Alabama" National Speech and Debate Competition in Birmingham, Alabama recently and won a NFL National School of Excellence Award. The award is given to teams that perform at an extremely high level and advance well beyond the six preliminary rounds of competition. Out of the 800 plus schools that could qualify for this achievement, Southside was one of only 20 schools to receive this honor.
The team was also highlighted in a video shown at closing ceremonies and former team co-captain Ricky Pulley, Jr. (c/o 2009) was chosen to speak at a private reception honoring the 2009 NFL Communicator of the Year, American Bar Association President, H. Tommy Wells, Jr. With student memberships well into thousands, the NFL and its Executive Director, J. Scott Wunn selected Ricky to speak on the powerful impact and influence speech and debate has had and will continue to have on his life. Another crowning achievement was with the public forum debate team of Jared Marr (c/o 2009) and Blair Brewer. These two young men placed in the top 24 out of 250 teams in the competition.
