Spring Has Sprung, But The "Pirate Snowman" Takes First Place in Banner Elk Snowman Contest

While we are all enjoying and celebrating the arrival of spring, there are some folks living in the high, northern mountains, who are still celebrating winter. Take Banner Elk, North Carolina, for instance. They have just announced that first place in the 2005 Avery Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce Snowman Contest went to Caroline Trent of Minneapolis for a pirate snowman she built on 19-E in late February. With a sign that read Shiver me timbers, (see photo on right) Carolines pirate collected $300 in booty for her hard work and creativity.

The $100 second prize went to Marissa Crawford and her grandmother Frankie on Old Beech Mountain Road in Elk Park for a very traditional snowman with a particularly friendly smile.

The $50 third prize went to Wanda King of Banner Elk for Gertrude the Snowperson. Wanda, who worked for a dentist for 21 years, says Gertrude's beautiful smile (made by a set of dentures) really stopped traffic on Hickory Nut Gap Road.

The snowman contest is held annually by the Avery Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce from December through March. A total of 25 snowmen, ranging in design from race cars to penguins, were entered in the 2004-2005 contest.

OK, lets get back to spring, if you don't mind.
