It’s Shrine Bowl season in the Carolinas! Now in its 74th year, the weekend has donated more than $63.1 million dollars to the Greenville, SC Unit of the Shriners Hostpial for Children, and 21 other Shriners Hospitals across the nation. Gibbs Stadium at Wofford College in Spartanburg will be the site of the 2010 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, the prestigious high school all-star football game that pits the best of South Carolina against the best of North Carolina, on Saturday, December 18.Players, selected by the Shrine Bowl coaches, are announced in October. Each team has 46 players. Shriners are not involved in player selection. The Upstate can be proud of the local gridiron excellence that will be evident in this year’s game. The Shrine Bowl is a highly prized opportunity for the Carolina’s best high school football players to shine. Among the area’s best players who made the roster in this year’s Shrine Bowl are Charone Peake, Darius Murry, Ronnie Martin, B.J. Johnson, Adam Humphries, Chase Hames, Stephen Grommer and DeEdward Burris.

The Shrine Bowl is played to benefit the Greenville (SC) Unit Shriners Hospital for Children and 21 other Shriners Hospitals across the nation. Last year’s game receipts and temple contributions raised $1.1 million. Since the first Shrine Bowl in 1937, more than $67 million has been raised for Shriners Hospitals. Played the third weekend in December, the game culminates the fund-raising efforts of the Shriners five Shrine Temples. In the game’s first year (1937), $2,500 was donated to the hospital. That figure has grown to more than $1.1 million annually with a total of more than $67 million raised during the past 71 years. Each year, participating players and coaches travel to the Greenville, SC Shriners Hospital, where they give presents to and play with the children, many of whom have no arms or legs or are burned over large portions of their bodies. The Shrine Bowl has a tremendous effect on the lives of patients and participants alike.
