The Walker Foundation and SCSDB Announce New College Scholarship, Deadline on April 15


Paying for college just got easier for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing with the establishment of the new McAlister Scholarship. The Walker Foundation and the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) and are proud to announce the availability of a brand new, four-year college scholarship through The McAlister Foundation. Guidelines and applications are available online at www.scsdb.org. The application deadline, originally set for April 1, 2010, has now been extended until April 15, 2010.

South Carolina residents who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, have received SCSDB services and are graduating high school seniors, current college students or returning adult students are eligible to apply. Applicants must meet all requirements detailed in the application, including a high-degree of financial need. The recipient will be awarded the total cost of attendance less federal, state and other scholarship awards for up to four years.

The mission of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind is to ensure that individuals we serve realize maximum success through high quality educational programs, outreach services and partnerships.

The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) was founded in 1849 by Rev. Newton Pinckney Walker and his wife Martha Hughston Walker when they opened their home as a private school, admitting five children who were deaf. The school became a state school in 1856.

The South Carolina State Department of Education (SDE) has named The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind a Palmetto Gold School for academic accomplishments, and a Red Carpet School for outstanding customer service and a family-friendly environment. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS/CASI), the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD) and SDE.
