Furman University will host the first annual Greater Greenville Scottish Games and Highland Festival Saturday, June 10.
The daylong event at Furman will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 5:30 p.m. The festival will also include a parade in downtown Greenville that begins at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Cost for the festival is $15 per adult and $7 per child (children under 5 admitted free). Discounted tickets may be purchased in advance at area Bi-Lo stories or by visiting the web at www.greenvillegames.org.
The Greater Greenville Scottish Games and Highland Festival is expected to draw as many as 20,000 people and generate approximately $4.3 million in revenue for the greater Greenville area. Festivals officials said participants will come from across the nation, Canada and Scotland. The June 9 kick-off parade will include bagpipe bands, Highland dancers, Furman University�s dance and band units, Scottish Heavy athletes, Scottish family banners, invited dignitaries and a Ceilidh (open stage venue for performers). In addition to food and goods of the Isles, events at Furman will feature 30-35 bagpipe bands in competition, Highland dancing and competition, the Southeastern Regional Amateur Scottish Athletic Championship, Border Collie sheep-herding exhibitions, and 75 to 80 clan tents. There will also be a children�s venue with games and contests, Irish story telling, Celtic bands and other musical performances.
