Seven New Schools Partner with Carolina First Center for Excellence

Seven new schools have joined or expanded their partnership with the Carolina First Center for Excellence (CFCE): Bethel Elementary, Berea Elementary, Mitchell Road Elementary, Northwest Middle, Greer Middle, Hope Academy and Hunt Meadows Elementary in Anderson 1.

CFCE was established in 2001 through the support of the Carolina First Foundation. Its mission is to serve as the provider of exemplary training, coaching and related services in continuous quality improvement, including Baldrige principles and practices, to schools, districts and other educational organizations. Schools involved with CFCE are seeing amazing results; their students are more motivated and are taking greater responsibility for their learning.

Principal Karen Chambers of Sue Cleveland Elementary, one of the 30 partnered schools of CFCE, explained, Using Quality Tools has enabled Sue Cleveland Elementary to better differentiate teaching for the purpose of reaching our academic goals. As a result of their partnership in 2002, Sue Clevelands PACT scores in English Language Arts improved 19 percentage points in 2006.

Participating CFCE teachers in Greenville County schools are trained in the same quality principles as employees at GE, Bosch, Michelin, and others. The business community understands the importance of quality training, and CFCE is training teachers to bring the same quality principles to their students.

If it werent for the generosity and charitable support of the Hollingsworth Funds and Carolina First Foundation, these schools would not be able to participate in this extraordinary program, explained Greenville Chamber of Commerce Manager of CFCE Lindsay Smith. Smith continued by saying, Before I began my job with the Chamber, I was a third grade school teacher. I understand the struggles teachers have in getting their students involved and excited to learn. The CFCE serves as a catalyst and resource center for exemplary training, coaching and facilitation. It enhances student performance by driving a Continuous Quality Improvement culture of learning throughout the school.

At the end of the school year, participants of the CFCE are given a survey, which has each participating teacher list the programs strengths and weakness. According to one of these surveys, a partner schoolteacher stated, Quality Tools are now a part of what we do. The students have ownership of their learning and it shows.
