Dr. Bruce R. Halverson Named President of SC Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities

Dr. Bruce R. Halverson has been named President of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities in Greenville, South Carolina. He replaces Dr. Donald W. Beckie, who has retired. Dr. Halverson is the President Emeritus of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Prior to that, Dr. Halverson was Dean of the School of Theatre at Florida State University, and before that, Head and Artistic Director of the Department of Theatre, University of Illinois - Urbana - Champaign. Dr. Halverson received his Bachelor's Degree in Speech & Drama with Honors from Augustana College, and his Doctorate in Theatre History from the University of Washington.

Dr. Halverson, his wife, Nancy, and son, Cole, will be moving to Greenville from Sioux Falls in the coming months.

Robert E. Hughes, Chairman of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities' Board of Directors, stated, "We are extremely pleased that Bruce Halverson is going to be the new President of the Governor's School. We conducted a national search, and his art education credentials and experience are impressive. In addition, he has been very involved in the communities where he has lived."

In commenting on his new position, Dr. Halverson stated that he is "looking forward to being associated with the outstanding students, faculty, and administration of the Governor's School. In the relatively short period since the South Carolina Governor's School has been open, it has already gained a national reputation that compares with the best known private art schools in the country. Everyone associated with that should be proud, and I am glad to be joining this team."
