The spring plant sale at the South Carolina Botanical Garden is expanding. This year�s sale will be April 23 and 24 with a new annuals and bedding plants sale on May 1. A primary mission of the plant sale is to share new, unusual and underused plants suited to the area. Some of this year�s offerings include a deer-resistant plum yew (Cephalotaxus harringtonia "Brooklyn Botanical Garden"), a weeping redbud (Cercis canadensis var. texensis "Traveller"), and a prostrate, double-flowering gardenia with excellent cold hardiness (Gardenia augusta "Crown Jewel"). There also will be native ferns from a local nursery and ornamental grasses, including Pink and White Muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) and Little Blue Stem (Schizachrium scoparium), as well as a wide selection of hostas for Southern gardens, including ""Guacamole," "Blue Mouse Ears" and "Krossa Regal." New perennial plants include Phlox nivalis "Eco Flirtie Eyes," Lantana "Chapel Hill Gold," Dianthus "Fire Star," Dianthus "Raspberry Swirl" and Buddleia "White Profusion," along with past favorites Buddleia "Royal Red," Lavender intermedia "Provence" and Rosmarinus "Arp." Native plants include "Joe-Pye Weed" (Eupatorium maculatum) and "Showy Obedient Plant" (Physostegia angustifolia), as well as a new-to-our-area white and pink hardy Nerium oleander. The first Annuals Sale on May 1 will feature hardy, colorful annuals that resist heat and drought. They have been tested, evaluated and used in the garden and include Hypoestes Splash Series, Melampodium "Million Gold," Gomphrena Gnome Series, Talinum paniculatum "Limon," Torenia Clown Series, Zinnia angustifolia and Dragon Wing Begonias. The regular sales area in the garden nursery also will be open.
