Emily Sandra Ware, daughter of Matthew and Jodi Ware, and little sister of Natalie Ware, of Mauldin, SC, passed away suddenly on June 20, 2009 at five months old. Her cause of death was determined as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Emily was a healthy, vibrant, happy baby and is missed greatly. Her bright red hair was always waving in the wind, earning her the nickname Emily Peacock. SIDS is the leading cause of death of infants one to twelve months of age, killing an average of 2,500 babies a year. A SIDS diagnosis is given when a complete autopsy reveals no distinguishable cause of death. Recent breakthrough research reveals a link between SIDS deaths and an abnormally low level of Serotonin in the brain, but more research needs to be done to uncover the mystery of SIDS and save babies. The American Academy of Pediatrics identifies risk factors that can contribute to SIDS deaths, such as stomach sleeping, smoking during pregnancy or exposure to smoke, and unsafe sleeping environment. In Emilys case, all precautions were followed and all risk factors avoided, but being an active five and a half month old, she rolled herself over on her stomach, her chosen sleep position, for her afternoon nap. Emily never woke up. On March 13, 2010, the 1st annual Peacock Strides for Babies will be held in memory of Emily, to benefit the CJ Foundation for SIDS. Funds raised will support SIDS research in the hope that the cause of SIDS deaths can be identified and prevented. The goal is that this terrible tragedy never happens to another family. The Peacock Strides for Babies will be a 5K Walk/Run and a 1-mile Family Fun Run held in Mauldin, SC. All proceeds will benefit the CJ Foundation for SIDS (www.cjsids.org). The CJ Foundation for SIDS is a nationally recognized leader in funding SIDS research. To register, donate, or become a sponsor, please visit the website at www.cjsids.org/peacock.
