New South Carolina Arts License Plate is Unveiled

The South Carolina Arts Commission has unveiled the new Driven by the Arts license plate. It can now be ordered at www.SouthCarolinaArts.com, and will be available at the SCDMV by late spring. The new license plate, featuring the familiar palmetto and crescent outlined in shades of blue, was revealed at the Columbia Museum of Art during a sale and ceremony presented by the South Carolina Arts Foundation.

Manning artist Ned Chilton was recognized for his design, which was selected from nearly 40 entries submitted by artists, graphic designers and students from across the state by a committee representing arts organizations and state agencies. Eric Holowacz, currently residing in New Zealand, and Columbia resident Leigh Newman were also recognized for coining Driven by the Arts. The slogan was among more than 200 entries that were submitted to the Arts Commission.

The proceeds from license plate sales will benefit arts education programs for schools and communities across the state. These programs include in-school artist residencies and the Arts in Basic Curriculum Project, which provides leadership to achieve quality, comprehensive arts education in dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and creative writing for all students in South Carolina.

We so excited to have a new tool to help bring the arts to communities across our state, said South Carolina Arts Commission Executive Director Suzette Surkamer. Everyone who purchases the new arts license plate will not only help promote the arts, but also help ensure that students have opportunities to enhance their learning through the arts.

BMW Manufacturing Co., Michelin North America and South Carolina Bank and Trust sponsored the evening. BMW provided two of its latest models to display the new license plate during the event.
