Pioneer Frozen Foods Breaks Ground In Prosperity, South Carolina; 145 New Jobs To Be Created


South Carolina Secretary of Commerce Charles Way, Jr. donned a chef hat and ceremonial gold shovel today when he joined Scott Petty, Jr. chairman of the board of C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. and others to turn the soil and begin the official reconstruction and remodeling of a 227,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Prosperity.

Pioneer Frozen Foods, South Carolina will produce a line of frozen dough and baked products for food service customers. The company will invest approximately $32 million in plant renovations and production systems and will create 140 � 145 new jobs for New Berry County and the Upstate. Employment applications will be available later this summer through the State�s Center for Accelerated Technical Training. The plant is expected to open in the fall.

Dale Tremblay, CEO of C. H. Guenther & Son, Inc. told the crowd �we truly struck gold in Prosperity today� as he uncovered a package of frozen biscuits �growing� in the ceremonial dirt. San Antonio based C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. is the parent company of Pioneer Frozen Foods.

"This is a great day for our company. We are excited to announce an expansion in our frozen food business, and we are especially pleased with the warm reception we have received here in Newberry County,� said Tremblay.

Secretary Way said, �"There's no doubt about it - Prosperity is found in South Carolina, and Pioneer Frozen Foods has located it here in Newberry County. C.H. Guenther will know soon that our state's capable workers, accessible infrastructure and network of highways surrounding the Newberry County facility will enhance Pioneer Frozen Foods' success while bringing excellent jobs to the Midlands. We are proud to call you our newest member of Team South Carolina."

The company has always had a corporate policy of giving back to the community and as it expands its business into South Carolina, the same will apply.

At the groundbreaking today, Pioneer Frozen Foods, South Carolina announced a partnership with the Newberry County School District and the creation of a $5,000 college scholarship fund for the graduating high school class of 2003. Details on the scholarship program will be announced at a later date.

Additionally, the company also donated $5,000 to the Newberry Opera House Renovation Project.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony at the plant location in Prosperity, Pioneer Frozen Foods, South Carolina hosted a community reception at the Newberry Opera House for more than 250 guests.

C. H. Guenther & Son, Inc. is the oldest family owned business in Texas and operates the oldest continuously owned milling company in the nation. The company�s consumer products are sold on grocers� shelves in 28 states under the White Lily, Pioneer and White Wings food brands. The company employs more than 700 people at its facilities in San Antonio and Duncanville, Texas and Knoxville, Tennessee. Founded in 1851 by a 26 year-old German immigrant named Carl Hilmar Guenther, the food company celebrated its 150th year anniversary in 2001.
