South Carolina Peach Festival Celebrates 25th Anniversary July 13 - 22 in Gaffney.

The South Carolina Peach Festival, celebrating its 25th year, will be held July 13 - 22 in Gaffney at Lake Welchel. In honor of such an important milestone as a 25th anniversary, festival organizers have arranged for a star-studded line-up which includes George Jones (seen to the right), a country music legend with a career spanning several decades, who will headline the country music concert on July 20. Also in store for the festival-going crowd will be the very popular and successful Percy Sledge, who will perform at the Peach Beach 2001 concert on July 21.

Given the popularity of George Jones, Peach Festival organizers are giving patrons an opportunity for reserved seating at the concert with "Silver Circle" seating. The festival board has set aside 2,000 reserved seats that will be sold for $40 each. The reserved seating section will give "Silver Circle" ticket holders the best seats in the house for one of only two concerts that Jones will be performing in July (the Delaware State Fair is the other venue). Jones' previous appearance at the South Carolina Peach Festival, in 1995, which was a reunion concert with Tammy Wynette, broke all previous festival attendance records.

The line-up for Peach Beach 2001 concert on July 21, with headliner Percy Sledge (second picture on right), ranks as one of the festival's best. Festival officials bill the concert as "The Biggest Outdoor Party of the Summer." Joining Sledge will be General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board (bottom picture), making an unprecedented fourth appearance at the festival. Percy Sledge's biggest hits include "When a Man Loves a Woman," "Take Time to Know Her," "It Tears Me Up," and "Warm and Tender Love." Rounding out the Peach Beach line-up will be The Holiday Band and The Spontanes. The audience is invited to bring their beach blankets, lawn chairs, coolers and shagging shoes.

The festival will begin with a two-day tractor pull July 13 - 14 on the Lake Whelchel site. The event will feature loud, powerful tractors taking turns pulling a weight transfer sled. The object is to see who can pull the sled the farthest. A "full pull" is 300 feet.

Other events include a 5K Run for the Peaches on July 21, a Hill Fall Race on July 15, a bowling tournament fundraiser July 14 - 15 in conjunction with the Cherokee Children's Home, a New Talent Night on July 17 and Peach Jam on July 14 for local and regional bands at Hames Music.

The country music concert and the Peach Beach concert will be held at Lake Welchel, off Interstate 85 at Exit 95.

Ticket prices are as follows: Country music concert - $15 in advance and $20 day of show (except "Silver Circle" tickets, $40 each); Peach Beach concert - $10 in advance, $15 day of show; tractor pull - $10 in advance, $15 day of show (children under 5 years are $5 each); and Arts and Crafts Show tickets are $2. Festival officials will announce ticket locations in the near future.
