 The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Furman University is currently registering students for its winter term.
OLLI, formerly known as Furman University Learning in Retirement, offers around 90 classes per term. Last winter, enrollment grew to just under 700 with courses offered in art, computers, finance, fitness, history, hobbies, crafts, foreign languages, literature, music, politics/business, religion and science/math. Classes in the winter of 2010 will run Jan. 11 through March 5. Whether you�re a newcomer to the area wanting to learn more about the Palmetto state or someone looking for activities to burn off those extra holiday pounds, a wide variety of courses will be available. For example, A.V. Huff, history professor emeritus at Furman, will teach �South Carolina History, 1895 to the Present,� while Peggy Leonard, who has been teaching dance since 1986, will be the instructor for �Line Dance� and �Shag and Ballroom Dancing� classes. One-day trips and events are planned exploring topics such as �Mill Village Life,� and hiking groups based on fitness level will take weekly trips. Membership in OLLI is $25 per year. Individual courses are offered at $40 each, and participants can take up to 15 courses per year for $325. Financial aid is available. To obtain a registration form, visit the OLLI office, which is located on the Furman campus behind McAlister Auditorium, next to the Playhouse Theatre, or call the OLLI office at 864-294-2998.
