The Greenville Symphony Orchestra recently announced its schedule for the 2004-2005 “Lollipops” concert season for young children entitled “Story Time with Lollipops!” The monthly concerts will incorporate a series of children’s stories that will be read aloud while symphonic music supports the narrative. “We are extremely excited about our season opener featuring the GSO Jazz Ensemble and South Carolina children’s book illustrator, Kate Salley Palmer, showing her original art and reading her new book, Bear Hug,” said Carol Roosevelt, Education & Grants Coordinator for the GSO. “The integration of music, art and literature will be a great start to this year’s concert series which presents a variety of musical instruments and children’s books through creative performances.“ Each concert will be held once a month on Saturdays from September through November and January through April at area libraries and the Greenville Mall. The books for “Story Time with Lollipops” cover a variety of subjects and include Bear Hug; Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?; When Uncle Took the Fiddle; The Shape of Things, and Little Bobo. “Lollipops” is an ensemble series that introduces children to the basics of music through a hands-on approach. Music concepts are taught to pre-school and elementary school children using a variety of creative methods. The concerts are free of charge and open to the public, and target children ages 2-6, however, other children and adults are welcome. And, by tradition, the entire audience will receive a lollipop at the conclusion of the concert! Reservations are not necessary. The “Lollipops” concert series is made possible through support from the Guild of the Greenville Symphony, Publix Super Markets Charities, HIS Radio, Family Legacy, Inc., The Symmes Foundation, Verizon Wireless, Spinx Corporation, The Graham Foundation, John I. Smith Charities, Carolina First, The South Carolina Arts Commission and the Metropolitan Arts Council.
