BMW Supplier Adding 44,000 Square Feet of Production Space.

Z. F.Lemforder Corporation, located in Duncan, South Carolina, has announced plans to expand their current facility by 35,000 square feet. Lemforder Corporation produces the front and rear axels used in BMW's X5 model. The X5 is an SUV that has been selling as fast as BMW can manufacture it.

BMW is currently producing 135 X5s per day, but they plan to increase their production to 300 units per day beginning January, 2001. The BMW plant is increasing production by adding a second production shift at their plant. The increase in production by BMW requires that all of their suppliers also increase their parts production to meet this new demand. Lemforder's new $1.8 million, 35,000-square-foot production facility is expected to be completed by August.

Lemforder built an 88,000-square-foot plant in 1994 in the Hillside Industrial Park. They expanded that facility in 1996 by an additional 44,000 square feet to meet the additional production demand by BMW. BMW hopes to increase their production from 135 X5s per day to 300 units by the end of the year. Lemforder will be responsible for supplying all of the axels for these units. Bernd Birnbaum, Lemforder's plant manager, anticipates hiring an additional 15-20 employees as a result of the expansion. This will result in the Lemforder plant employing a total of 110-115 employees when the expansion is completed.

The BMW plant has spawned a plethora of new plants to meet its production needs. A total of twelve suppliers are located in Spartanburg County, and there are 25 suppliers located throughout the State of South Carolina.
