Ice Skating, Ice Hockey Lessons Make a Great Start to the New Year for Young Sports Buffs

Greenville often finds itself in the wonderfully unique position of being able to offer its residents some great amenities and lifestyle opportunities that other Southern cities of the same size arent able to offer. One good example is the Pavilion Recreation Complex, a full-service, year-round sports complex that offers area residents the opportunity to learn to ice skate along with numerous other athletic opportunities.

Many a young girl daydreams about one day being the next Michele Kwan, Sasha Cohen, or Sarah Hughes, while lots of little boys enjoy NHL stories and games. The Pavilion has the facilities to start young skaters on their way to a lifetime of spotlight performances or simply a lifetime of good, healthy exercise.

The Pavilion offers Learn to Ice Skate group lessons that are ideal for beginning skaters. The lessons are taught by experienced instructors and use the guidelines that are established by the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) and their Basic Skills Program. All group classes meet on Monday evenings for eight weeks. Skate rental is included as well as Freezer Passes, which offer students eight free practice times during public skating sessions. Session I runs from January 3 February 21, and Session II runs from February 28 April 18. Snowplow Sam (ages 4-5) and Basic 1 (ages 6-15) will meet from 5:30-6 PM. These classes are for first-time skaters and teach safety, gliding, and stopping. Basic 2-6 (ages 6-15) classes meet from 6-6:30 PM. These progressive classes teach edges, turns, and forward and backward crossovers. Students may also progress to three-turns and elementary jumps and spins. Basic 7 and 8 and Adult Basic Levels 1-4 meet from 6:30-7 PM. In these classes, all basic skills are adapted to the adult skater. The program cost is $75 ($56 for in district residents), and there is an annual $5 charge for USFSA program enrollment.

Private ice skating lessons are also available for skaters who prefer one-on-one instruction in figure skating, ice dance, or pairs skating. The Pavilion has a professional coaching staff; all coaches are members of the Professional Skaters Association and hold credentials from the USFSA. Lessons range in length from 15 60 minutes, and fees range from $10.25 to $50.50 per session. In addition to the lesson fee, students must purchase ice time, which is $4 per session when purchased a week in advance to $6 per session when purchased the day of the lesson.

Ice hockey lessons are available for ages 4-13 on Mondays and Saturdays; skaters can choose to play once or twice per week. Level 1 youth learn stroking and stops; there is no stick handling. Level 2 players skate with sticks and pucks and must wear full hockey gear. Advanced players and goalies also wear full gear.

Ice hockey lessons are offered on Mondays, January 3 March 7, 2005, and on Saturdays, January 7 March 12, 2005. Level I and II lessons are on 7-7:30PM on Mondays, and 11:15-11:45 AM on Saturdays. Advanced players and goalies meet on Mondays from 6:30-7:30 PM. The cost of 30-minute lessons is $40 per week ($30 in-district); one-hour lessons are $80 per week ($60 in-district).

Youth ice hockey leagues, for ages 4-17 years, run January March, and adult ice hockey leagues run January through early April. The adult league offers four different levels, based on skill.
