GSO Musicians to Perform “Shoulder to Shoulder” with GCYO Tonight, January 6

Musicians of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra will perform alongside musicians of the Greenville County Youth Orchestra in a special concert entitled “Shoulder to Shoulder” on Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Peace Center’s Gunter Theatre at 8 PM. Conducted by Dr. Gary A. Robinson, the concert provides these young musicians firsthand experience in a professional orchestra environment. Caroline Ulrich, GSO Principal Flute, will solo with Prentiss Kendall, GCYO Harpist, in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute & Harp. In addition, the musicians will perform Saint-Saens’ Dance Bacchanale from Samson and Dalila and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major.

“The GSO is excited at the opportunity to perform alongside our area youth musicians,” says Carol Roosevelt, Education Coordinator for the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. “This concert provides a wonderful experience for the students to learn from the professionals who can serve as their mentors.”

Greenville County Youth Orchestra is the student symphony orchestra of the School District of Greenville County, and is the Orchestra-In-Residence at Greenville’s Fine Arts Center. Comprised of auditioned and individually selected members, the full GCYO and its smaller Chamber Orchestra perform challenging works from the standard orchestral repertoire. GCYO regularly also performs local, regional, and national premiers of outstanding new and “recently discovered” works. Their performances are held at The Peace Center for the Performing Arts and at Furman’s McAlister Auditorium. For the aspiring professional musician, Greenville County Youth Orchestra provides the hands-on training essential to begin a music career. All GCYO members, however, enjoy a high level of artistry in music making, and share this artistry with the Upstate community.

Tickets to the special concert “Shoulder to Shoulder” with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and the Greenville County Youth Orchestra are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Tickets can be purchased by calling The Peace Center Box Office at 864-467-3000.
