Two S.C. Governor's School Students Accetped at The Juilliard School In NYC

Two senior Drama students at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities are among an elite group of 18 students across the nation accepted into The Juilliard School Drama Division's Actor Training Program for Fall 2005. The students are Teyonah Parris, formerly of Lower Richland High School, Columbia; and Stacey Scott, formerly of Irmo High School, Columbia.

"We are very proud that two of our students have been chosen to join a community of accomplished performing artists in such an exciting and challenging program," said President Dr. Donald Beckie.

"To have one student accepted is a tremendous compliment to our program," added Daniel Murray, Drama department chairman, "but having two out of 18, or more than 10% of those accepted nationwide, is incredible." Now in its sixth academic year, the SCGSAH has had three students accepted into Juilliard's Drama Division since 2003.

Alumni of The Juilliard School are among the world's most distinguished composers, conductors, singers, actors, playwrights, dancers, choreographers, and musicians, including such artists as Leontyne Price, Robin Williams, Paul Taylor, James Levine, and many others. The School is located at Lincoln Center in New York City.

The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities provides high caliber pre-professional training and arts education through an intensive curriculum in the literary, visual and performing arts combined with a rigorous academic curriculum and humanities studies. In addition to the residential high school, the School offers the two-week Discovery Program for rising ninth graders; the two-week Academy for high school sophomores; the five - week Summer Dance Institute for students entering grades 7-11; and professional development opportunities for arts educators.
