Vera Gomez is an award winning, published and performance poet whose recent book Barrios Voices won the 2007 SC Poetry Initiative's 2007 Chapbook Contest winner series.
Terri McCord is the author of two award winning chapbooks: The Art and the Wait and In the Company of Animals. The SC Arts Commission awarded her their 2002 Literary Fellowship. Additionally, McCord is an accomplished visual artist. Things get underway at 7:30pm on September 27. Coffee Underground is located at 1 East Coffee Street in Greenville. Cover is $5. Simply put, poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. A poetry slam is an event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience. Wits End Poetry is working to make poetry as familiar to people in Upstate, SC as it is to people in New York, LA, and Chicago. The power of poetry lies in its appeal and relevance to diverse audiences. Poetry also encourages and develops literacy and creativity in both adults and youth.
