Grove Elementary fourth grade teacher Marie Havran received a big surprise from OfficeMax as part of A Day Made Better, a national event that calls attention to the issue of teachers spending their own money to purchase classroom supplies.Ken Rieger, store manager of the Woodruff Road OfficeMax, surprised Mrs. Havran with a huge box filled with $1,000 worth of classroom supplies as well as a new office chair and a case of copy paper. I really didnt know what to say when I walked into my room and it was full of students and cameras, said Mrs. Havran. I thought someone was in trouble. One item in the gift box brought the classroom to cheers a pencil sharpener. I think the students were most excited about the pencil sharpener. Theyve been using a hand-held sharpener because I couldnt afford to buy an electric one this year. Also included in the box were planners, a label maker, a digital camera, dry erase markers and a board, pens, a case of copy paper, and much more. I would have easily spent more than $1,000 on office supplies this year, said Havran. Its just part of the job. The way I look at it, I ask, What can I do to make my classroom run better? This gift has everything we will use and will help my students every day. A Day Made Better is held annually in October, when OfficeMax associates surprise and honor more than 1,000 teachers at Title I schools around the country with a total of $1 million worth of classroom supplies.
