Students, parents and school staff recently spent the day by walking around the Brook Glenn Elementary track with Jared Fogle, the Subway Guy who lost hundreds of pounds a decade ago and has kept the weight off by eating at Subway restaurants.Fogles visit to Brook Glenn Elementary, and later to A. J. Whittenberg Elementary, included an assembly where he shared his P.E.P. talk message with students: Play More. Eat Right. And Push Away the TV and Computer Screens. He also shared his experiences as an obese child and encouraged students to eat right and exercise. Brook Glenn Elementary students receive positive reinforcement for exercising from the schools physical education teacher, Athena Hortis. She coordinates the school-wide Mileage Club in which students meet twice a week to exercise and train for upcoming road races. The goal of the Mileage Club is for each student to walk or run 40 miles during the school year and become more active at school outside their physical education classes. Jareds visit is the official kickoff to the Subway Fresh Fit Video and Poster competition among schools to bring awareness to the childhood obesity issue by rewarding youth for being physically active and making healthy food choices. Elementary and middle school students can compete in the Subway Fresh Fit competition by either drawing a picture or recording a 30 to 60 second video. The winner will receive a $1,000 fitness grant for their school plus $1,000 in Subway food for their family. Entries will be accepted until October 4. (Image provided by Greenville County Schools.)
