The Furman University Golf Club, which has been closed for the past five months while the greens and bunkers were renovated, has recently reopened.
The course is available for public play. All 18 greens were reconstructed and sprigged with Champion Bermuda grass, and the redesign features a dozen new fairway bunkers as well as new tees on five holes. The renovation was done by architect Kris W. Spence. Its a sharper, more well-defined course with a much more distinct and unique look, Spence said. Since the Furman Golf Club is home to the universitys mens and womens golf teams, Spence said he wanted to add character and difficulty to the putting surfaces to challenge the modern collegiate golfer. But he also wanted the design to accommodate the everyday player at the course. The original designers did an excellent job routing the course over a beautiful piece of rolling topography, but the greens lacked definition and didnt offer strategic variety, Spence said. We incorporated more of a Donald Ross look to the green complexes, and added bunkers cut tight to the greens with steep grass faces. Spence said the changes at Furman make for a better golf course for the average player as well as one that can be set up for high-level tournament play. We have two very competitive, nationally-ranked golf teams, said Furman head professional Kevin Dehlinger. The golf course had to be tournament ready and tournament difficult, yet able to be set up on a day-to-day basis for the average golfer. Kris accomplished that. The course has four sets of tee markers: 6,993 yards (purple), 6,500 yards (black), 6,009 yards (white) and 5,281 yards (lavender).
