Furman University Honored by Carolina Recycling Association for its Sustainability Efforts

Furman University was awarded an Outstanding College or University Recycling Program Award by the Carolina Recycling Association during the organizations annual conference and trade show in Charleston last month.

The Outstanding College or University Program Award honors a school that promotes sustainable resource use through waste reduction, reuse and recycling on a college campus.

Among a vast list of accomplishments, Furman provides comprehensive recycling services at its facilities as well as a variety of ways for students to learn about sustainability and conservation in and out of the classroom. All students must complete a general education requirement focused on Humans and Natural Environment.

Students also have the option of completing a concentration in Environmental Studies or the newly approved Sustainability Science major, the second such undergraduate program in the country. Additionally, the university engages students in sustainability, conservation, and recycling outside the classroom by having students monitor waste and recycling at the university.

By working with Facilities Services, faculty, and staff to research the content of waste, students determine how much recyclable waste is being disposed of as trash. By monitoring the same areas of campus over a three-year period, the students have been able to provide significant advances in understanding the waste stream, and have been able to share their research at two national conferences. In addition, the universitys sustainability master plan and climate action plan was one of the first in the nation to address all aspects of sustainability on campus in a comprehensive and holistic manner.

The Carolina Recycling Association (CRA) is a non-profit organization serving the public and private recycling industry in order to advance waste reduction and recycling in North and South Carolina.
