Clemson University has announced a great community and campus events schedule for August and September. Community residents and students alike will enjoy any number of the following programs and events. Some require registration and have participation limits, so register early if you are interested in participating. The Brooks Center for the Performing Arts at Clemson University will offer a series of back-stage tours on Wednesdays in August. The free tours, at 11 a.m. on Aug. 1, 8, 15, and 29, will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the 1,000-seat performing arts center. "Tourists" will see the Brooks Center's two performing stages, dressing rooms, green room, scenic design shop and other production areas. Also, the tours will feature the band rehearsal hall, the choral recital rooms as well as academic classrooms throughout the Brooks Center. The tours will meet in the lobby of the Brooks Center, and will take about one hour to complete. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes. For more information, contact the performing arts department at (864) 656-3043. Bartram's Trio, a new chamber music ensemble of faculty members from the performing arts department at Clemson University, will give a debut performance on Wednesday, August 1. The concert, in the intimate 100-seat Bellamy Theater of the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, begins at 8 p.m. and is free to the public. The trio takes its name from a Southern tree saved from extinction more than 200 years ago by William Bartram, an early naturalist who explored the Upstate and the Southeast. Members of the ensemble are Clemson flute instructor Kate Steinbeck, Clemson cello instructor Elizabeth Austin and Andrew Levin, associate professor of music and conductor of the Clemson University Symphony Orchestra. Their performance is the first concert of the Friendship Music Festival, a summer residency recital series for the Upstate. Future performances will feature a variety of ensembles playing in various locations in the region, with the university serving as the festival's home base. For additional information, contact the Brooks Center box office at (864) 656-7787, Monday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. The Clemson Players will present "Rumors," a comic farce by one of America's leading playwrights, Aug. 2-5 at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts at Clemson University. Written by Neil Simon, "Rumors" chronicles the 10th wedding anniversary of a high-ranking New York City official and his wife. However, the happy occasion soon sours -- the deputy mayor shoots himself in the head, his wife is missing and his lawyer, a guest at the party, decides it's time for a cover-up.
Clemson University opens its 2001-02 academic year Tuesday, Aug. 21, with a convocation, preceded by a cross-campus procession of faculty, staff and students in colorful regalia. The procession will begin at 8:30 am from Sikes, Brackett and Tillman halls. Other participants will join at the library plaza, and all will enter the Brooks Center theater at 9 a.m. Clemson's new vice president for research, Chris Przirembel, will be the guest speaker. For more information, call Brenda Smith at 656-3940. Hundreds of Clemson sports fans will flock to the T. Ed Garrison Arena Aug. 30 for the annual IPTAY Gathering at the Garrison Football Kick-off from 5-10 p.m. -- and the public is invited. The free seasonal pep rally is sponsored by Clemson University Alumni Association and the Fort Hill Clemson Club. The seafood buffet is $15 per person. For more information, contact Randy Boatwright (656-5671) or Cathy Putnam (646-2717). Feeling stressed out? Then plan to attend "Relaxercise" each Tuesday for four weeks from noon until 1 p.m. beginning Sept. 4. "Relaxercise" is part of the Creative Awareness Program being offered by the South Carolina Botanical Garden, located on the Clemson University campus. The regime consists of exercises that induce relaxation. It is a four-week training series in relaxation, stress resolution and revitalization. The training consists of simple, non-impact, non-aerobic exercises that concentrate on breathing, gentle body movements and mind-body awareness. Pre-registration is required by Tuesday, Aug. 21. Reservations are assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis upon receipt of payment. Cost is $40. The workshop is limited to 20 persons. Since space is limited, the fee is nonrefundable. However, there will be a full refund if the series is cancelled due to limited participation. Contact Ernie Denny at [email protected] or (864) 650-8841 to request registration material. The workshop will be held at the Hayden Conference Center. Registrants will receive a confirmation letter with directions to the specific location of the series. The South Carolina Botanical Garden is at the intersection of Highway 76 and Perimeter Road. The Garden encompasses 270 acres of gardens, streams and woodlands. It is open year-round from dawn to dusk. (photographs provided by Clemson Universtiy)
