Clemson Accepts Eight New National Scholars

The eight students who will enter the Clemson University National Scholars Program in the fall have an average SAT score of 1534 and an average high school GPA of 4.84 both the highest of any incoming scholar class since the program began in 2000.

Every year the final decisions are challenging, said Jamie Williams, associate director of the National Scholars Program. This year it was even more true. As the caliber of applicant to Clemson and the Calhoun Honors College has increased over the last few years, so have the remarkable accomplishments of the students who emerge as National Scholar finalists.

The new scholars are:

Ross Beppler of Johns Creek, Ga.
Preston Berkley of Ranson, W.Va.
Chris Hapstack of Greenville
Jessica Lau of Glen Allen, Va.
Fielding Lowrance of Greenville
Karl Lykken of Wheaton, Ill.
Jenny Tumas of Los Alamos, N.M.
Sarah Waddill of Rock Hill.

The group includes five presidents of the National Honor Society, four captains of quiz bowl teams, three members of FIRST Robotics competition teams, three basketball team captains, two soccer team captains, two math team captains, an artist, a filmmaker, a National Latin Exam gold medalist, an FFA national champion and a community swim coach.

These students were highly sought after by top colleges around the United States, Williams said. They received acceptances from more than a dozen top-20 public and private schools and scholarship offers totaling nearly $1 million.

The National Scholars Program provides full scholarships for four years of undergraduate education, a study-abroad opportunity in Europe and a range of enhanced educational activities. The National Scholars Program is supported by financial gifts from donors interested in ensuring that Clemson has one of the nations premier scholarship programs.
