Hydrogeology Symposium to Draw Hundreds of Groundwater Specialists on Thursday

With 50 presentations covering issues affecting groundwater science, quality and use, the 18th annual David S. Snipes/Clemson Hydrogeology Symposium will draw scientists and engineers from universities, government and industry to the Madren Conference Center at Clemson University on April 1.

Sponsored by Clemson's environmental engineering and earth sciences department, the symposium will draw 25 commercial exhibitors engaged in environmental sciences from six states.

"This is an opportunity for industry-related projects to intermingle with academic research and bridge the gap that has traditionally separated these two endeavors," said Scott Brame, a research associate and assistant professor in the department.

"This symposium is an on-going effort to engage and educate the hydrogeological community at large, whether from industry or academia," Brame said. "Our primary focus is on geologic- and hydrologic-related issues in the southeastern United States, but it is not restricted to any geographic extent."

The presentations will cover a wide assortment of topics, from groundwater networks to laboratory practices.

Associated with the symposium are field trips for scientists on March 31, April 2 and April 16 to Pax Mountain and Glassy Mountain. Jack Garihan and Bill Ranson of Furman University, along with Cameron Warlick of HydroSource Associates Inc., will lead the trips.

In opening remarks in last year's symposium, Esin Gulari, dean of the College of Engineering and Sciences, noted that the symposium plays a important role in the university's ongoing mission of promoting collaboration and exchange between educators, industry and government.

The first Hydrogeology Symposium, organized by David S. Snipes, began in 1992 as a single-session conference with 50 participants. It now draws about 350 attendees and dozens of exhibitors for 50 oral and poster presentations in three consecutive sessions.
