BMW Charity Pro-Am Golf Returns This Weekend


The BMW Charity Pro-Am is the only tournament on the Nationwide Tour where amateurs and celebrities are grouped with Nationwide Tour professionals in a four-day better-ball competition over three courses. The tournment's three host courses are Bright's Creek Golf Club (Mill Spring, NC), The Carolina Country Club (Spartanburg, SC) and Thornblade Club (Greer, SC). Amateurs, celebrities and pros rotate between three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with the 14 lowest scoring pro-amateur/pro-celebrity teams advancing to play Sunday's final round at Thornblade Club. Celebrities play once at each course on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Professional winner of the overall 72-hole event will take home $126,000 from the total purse of $700,000, which is one of the largest purses on the Nationwide Tour. Amateurs and celebrities compete for individual prizes and cash donations to the charity of their choice out of the beneficiaries selected by South Carolina Charities, Inc.

Last year�s BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament generated $906,308. In eight years, the BMW Charity Pro-Am has generated and distributed more than $6.6 million to 125+ charities in Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina.

Nationwide Tour history was made in 2004, when two World Golf Hall of Famers participated in the BMW Charity Pro-Am � Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

According to a University of North Florida study, on average, a Nationwide Tour event generates $4.55 million for the local economy. That means the BMW Charity Pro-Am has pumped just under $36.5 million into the area economy since 2001. More than $5 million is expected to be generated from the 2009 tournament.

More than 2,500 hotel room nights are booked as a direct result of the BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament.

More than 1,400 volunteers donate their time and talents to help run the BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament.

The BMW Charity Pro-Am is the only event held in Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina that is broadcast live around the world for four days.

Eighty (81) celebrities have participated in the BMW Charity Pro-Am. This year's celebrities include Steve Azar, Lucas Black, Javier Colon, Jason Dohring, Oliver Hudson, Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Mills, Terry O�Quinn, Michael Pena, Dennis Quaid, ,George Rogers, Joe Don Rooney, Stefanie Schaeffer, Sterling Sharpe, Kevin Sorbo, Kordell Stewart, Dabo Swinney, Paula Trickey, Gary Valentine, and Ben Wright.
