Greenville County Schools Releases 2020-21 Student Calendar

Greenville County Schools has released the 2020-21 student calendar. Students will start the new school year on Monday, August 17, 2020.

Their final day of class will be Friday, June 4, 2021. In accordance with state law, the calendar includes 180 scheduled instructional days plus three makeup days.  Ten professional development/teacher workdays are included in keeping with state requirements. Under existing state law, students may not start school prior to the third Monday in August.

The last day of school before Winter Break will be Friday, December 18 and the first day back will be Monday, January 4. Spring Break is slated for April 5-9, 2021. The day before Winter Break (December 18) and the last two days of school (June 3-4) will be half-days for students.

Other student holidays include Labor Day (Sept. 7), Fall Break (November 2-3), Thanksgiving Break (November 25-27), Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 18), Presidents’ Day (February 15), Memorial Day (May 31), and three professional development/teacher workdays (October 19, January 15, and March 19).

The state-required school makeup days, used in case of inclement weather or other unexpected closures, are Thursday, March 18 (Makeup Day #1), Friday, April 23 (Makeup Day #2) and Friday, April 2 (Makeup Day #3). These days, sometimes called “snow days,” will remain as student and teacher holidays unless the District must close unexpectedly. Makeup days are scheduled in the spring after the most likely chance of winter weather has passed. They are distributed in 2020-21 to provide maximum time off (i.e. attached to a break or weekend), should they not be needed.

The Superintendent determines the school calendar after receiving recommendations from the Calendar Committee, which receives input from parent groups and school faculties. The recommendations are also based on State requirements and factors such as required testing dates set by the State Department of Education. The Calendar Committee is comprised of parents, teachers, principals, and staff.
